FAST and SLOW

LISA EAST and RENNIE TAYLOR | WYCHWOOD BARNS STUDIO 164

In FAST and SLOW, Lisa East and Rennie Taylor explore their individual relationships to time through the materiality of analogue photography. Over the course of a year, the artists engaged in dialogue through image-making across two cities, Montréal and Toronto. What emerged was a recognition of how the fastness of photography – moments recorded instantaneously – related to the slower process of meaning-making. “Fast” is rendered through instant photography, objects imprinted on lumens and black and white film; “slow” is found in the meanings that emerge, the selection process and a recognition of gradual change over time. Both bodies of work explore themes of duality, intimacy and loss. Together, FAST and SLOW are two perspectives of a year of change.
